At a European level, the concept of third mission and impact on society has been formalized by expanding the original role of technology transfer (mostly research enhancement through university patents and spin-offs) and by recognizing a new social dimension of the third mission.

The University of Naples Federico II is well aware that it is a complex and evolving phenomenon, the result of the dialogue between universities, industry, government and society, on the issues of the generation and application of knowledge, outside the traditional academic context, in terms of “contribution to society”.

The importance of the Third Mission is highlighted in the Anvur lines as part of the institutional mission of the University in terms of “openness to the socio-economic context through the enhancement and transfer of knowledge, which includes in addition to the economic enhancement of research, also initiatives with a socio-cultural and educational value”.
